In short, Poke (pronounced poke-eh) is a beautiful combination of raw cubed fish and vegetables. To make it even simpler, think of deconstructed sushi… in a bowl. This aesthetically pleasing taste of Hawaii has finally come to Manchester and I was lucky enough to attend the launch party to sample some…
As soon as I heard about the launch of this new eatery on Church Street in the Northern Quarter, I was really rather excited. Lets be honest now, although Manchester has recently had an influx of healthier eateries such as protein based Kettle Bell Kitchen and Bosu Body Bar, salad inspired fast food options such as Chop’d and Wahu and the prettier eateries such as the Garden and Evelyn’s; who combine taste and health in beautiful environments we still aren’t the quite as advanced as other areas. Although I am happy with the slowly expanding market for healthier options, it is just that, slow. Well, compared to London that is. So when I was informed of this new Hawaiian Poke restaurant, I was delighted that another potential gem would be added to Manchester expanding food scene.
The space is not huge nor extravagant but it is well decorated and stylish. As you walk in you are greeted by a lovely front counter, vividly demonstrating all the delicious ingredients that make up each bowl and as you continue further you notice a fairly sized, communal-feeling seating area.
On my visit, I was lucky enough to try a bit of each dish (as they say, variety is the spice of life…) and after trying them I can safely say that I would definitely return for a nutrient dense lunch. In my opinion, the main appeal of this simplistic venue is that you can experience all the joys of eating sushi (especially the joy you get from eating delicious raw fish, which is nearly impossible for the average Joe-sephine like me to safely recreate at home) without the guilt of popping very sugary rice wrapped roll after roll. Instead you get a balanced bowl containing a delicious protein, lots of veggies and a healthier carbohydrate. They also cater for non fish lovers with a chicken option and even vegans with their tofu offering.
For anyone in or around the northern quarter looking for a guilt free lunch, I would recommend giving this place a try. They even have an impressive selection of homemade juices that pair perfectly. Visit their website below for more information and a full menu.
