Calsway Snacks Review

Wait… Calswhat?

Calsway Snacks are a company that aim to help busy and active people to coordinate precise daily calories intake, in a convenient way. To do this they have brought out a line of snacks that enable people to ‘eat right’ and recently, I was lucky enough to receive a big box of these to try. Anyone who knows me or has read my posts, knows that I am a snacking fiend with a delectably sweet tooth, that is not always easy to satisfy with snacks marketed as ‘healthy’. However, Calsway snacks managed to satisfy this, without making me ravenous for a binge and the well portioned packets informed me of how many calories I had consumed, so I did not have to feel guilty for snacking. Most packages are labelled as 100, 150 or 200 calories so you can enjoy a treat without derailing your diet progress. You can use the website to select which snack you prefer from calorie count or diet choice, such as vegan or paleo or even what nutritional benefit you are looking for. Which makes it a lot easier than having to search through each product to find this out!

Kids Lunch Box Rescue

The box of goodies I received is known on their website as the kids lunch box rescue 12-box. This included beetroot and apple crisps, their fruity rock n roll balls, mixed berries and berry strips. I thought it would only be right to try these with my work friends and see what we honestly thought (FYI these were none food bloggers who also like to eat healthier with a crazy sweet tooth).

El Capo

El Capo is a Mexican restaurant and bar that has become a staple part of Tariff Street in Manchester’s infamous Northern Quarter. Albeit, the bar at weekends is one of the places to be but what is even better than the prospect of a busy tequila fuelled night out is that Monday night is steak night! The offer includes a 16oz (yes, it is huge) steak with any two sides of your choosing, plus a bottle of red or white house wine. They also do £1 Taco Tuesdays and 50p Wing-it Wednesdays, if that is more your thing.

Strawberries and Cream Overnight Oat

In collaboration with Shaken Udder, I decided to create some delicious breakfasts using their milkshakes instead of milk. After the popularity of my salted caramel waffles, I decided the next step would be to create something even easier to make ahead and very healthy. Topped with jam, Rachel’s Greek yoghurt and strawberries, this strawberries and clotted cream bowl is a flavour sensation. Super creamy without a sickly note in sight. Give it a try…

Another Heart To Feed

Amazing lighting, check. Beautiful food, check. Aesthetically pleasing latte art on your oh so hipster matcha latte, check. Another heart to feed ticks all my boxes and more but was it really everything I had hoped for and more?! Urm…. yes!

Breakfast Board and Banana Bread

Breakfast Board and Banana Bread

The strikingly colourful exterior renders this little gem as something that simple can not be missed, even if you tried! The more minimalist interior lends itself to provide a slightly Scandinavian feel although I am guessing it is meant to be in keeping with the distinctively Australian vibe the owners wanted to portray.

Chris James’ 3R Cleanse Reviewed

“It does not taste as bad as it looks”

The above sentiment was remarked by my friend when tasting one of my murky brown 3R sachets mixed with freshly made orange juice… Personally I did not mind the taste of them and the cleanse overall. In the past I have tried chugging down bright green spirulina and other weird and wonderful concoctions in the past, in the hope of self-taught detoxing, with little or no avail. Luckily the 3R cleanse sachets are packed with nutrients and a refreshing gingery taste and can actually be enjoyed when being drank. Read below for more about the cleanse and if I actually lost weight or inches…

About the Cleanse

The website states that the “3R” Cleanse is a unique and condensed cleanse of 3 days. Delicious when added to your fresh pressed juices and smoothies!”

But what do the 3 R’s stand for?

“Day 1 – REMOVE. First day is Elimination Day. Cut out of all the unnatural products from the diet, including refined, and Processed foods.
Day 2 – RESTORE. Second day is Raw. ie raw vegetables and salads, nuts etc.
Day 3 – REJUVENATE. Third day liquid juice & smoothie cleanse. (soup recipes for extra sustenance)

“3R” targets the gut, and is a nutritional powerhouse of antioxidants, protein, and phytosterols. Exciting new ingredients include organic Pumpkin & Chia seeds, Golden Flax, Turmeric, Ginger Root, Dandelion leaf, and Prune Fibre, and L-Glutamine.” *

It is aimed towards those that may have an event coming up, such as a holiday or a wedding and that want to lose a few kilos in a few days to feel great and be mentally prepared. Well, as it turned out I happened to be going on holiday so I decided to give this a go.

Usually I am not a fan of faddy diets or food-less ‘detox’s’ but I wanted to try the 3R cleanse as it seemed different. They were not asking me to starve myself for 3 days nor were they depriving me of essential nutrients. They included healthy, vegan recipes in a small brochure to make this easier. For me this was not just a quick fix, I have worked hard over 7 weeks to shift my gradual winter gain of over half a stone but uh-oh I had plateaued. I started this, hoping the 3R cleanse would break this plateau and help me shift the final few pounds before my holiday….

Day 1 – REMOVE

I like to think that I eat relativity healthy and have a balanced diet but I do suffer from bloating and due to an iron deficiency dropping my energy levels, I have been eating a lot of sugary products these past few months, so I thought it would be a good idea to remove these nasties. For breakfast I had my first orange juice with added 3R Cleanse sachet and made an improvised version of the grain free muesli recipe, following the guidelines in the recipe leaflet provided and served this with blueberries, grapes and almond milk… so far so good.

Mexican Style Quinoa

Inspired by one of the meals I had on my recent 3R cleanse, I decided to make a more substantial lunch time version. This Mexican inspired quinoa has all the essential flavours with less of the guilt you usually feel for eating Mexican food! Delicious with or without the egg, if you want to keep it vegan. Make ahead for a super quick lunch option and keep refrigerated for up to a few days.

Picky Party Pâté Platter

Contrary to my fussier days when I would not eat anything, I now am the sort of person who loves to pick at absolutely everything. Why eat one type of food when you can eat ten?! This style of eating always works great when entertaining and usually requires very little actual cooking. So when I receive a batch of Castle Maclellan Pate’s* to try, I thought this would be a great time to invite the parents to dinner. I admit, I have never really been much of a pate person and I was a bit apprehensive about trying these. This may be because I have never really been exposed to it (and if you would have said ‘chicken liver’ to 10 year old me I probably would have winced and pulled my face but now I have discovered how delicious it can be!). The Scottish heather honey added a full bodied flavour to the pate but in my opinion the vegetarian oven roasted mushroom option was even tastier!

Salted Caramel Waffles

Shaken Udder Salted Caramel Waffle

I recently was lucky enough to receive a batch of Shaken Udder Flavoured Milkshakes to try and straight away I was drawn to the salted caramel bottle (I think this much be one of my favourites flavours, I mean, who doesn’t love caramel?!). Anyway, I decided that this flavour would make a great substitute to standard milk and added flavourings in my waffles. Hence, my salted caramel waffles were born – but of course they needed toppings; so I heated some blueberries and popped them on top and drizzled with a salted caramel yoghurt…

… Wow, I was seriously impressed with how these turned out! The waffles required no extra sugar adding on my part as they were sweet enough from the none artificial sugar in the milkshake, they were firm yet light and took literally 10 minutes to make from start to finish. Whats even better is, they can be made the night before and reheated the next day!  The standard Shaken Udder bottle size is 330ml, the recipe is for one portion but you can easily make two portions from the one singular bottle…

Rachel’s Skinny Brownies

Recently, the lovely people at Rachel’s organic yoghurt were kind enough to send me some vouchers to give their different flavours a try! So, I thought this would be a great excuse to get creative in the kitchen… I find that yoghurt is such a diverse and delicious food already that it can easily be eaten and enjoyed, alone as a snack or alongside a powerhouse of nutrients in the form of berries, nuts and other fruits. However, it can also work amazingly at replacing and reducing the fat in many recipes. I decided to give it a go and swap the butter in the traditional, basic brownie recipe with Rachel’s Greek style set yoghurt and mashed banana. The addition of fruit meant I could use less sweetener so I decided to used coconut sugar as it is less refined. Also, using oats and gluten free baking powder made this recipe gluten free. I even used my lovely work colleagues as guinea pigs to see if they could tell the difference and they could not guess that these were healthy brownies! So give it a go if you fancy a healthier, gluten-free, refined sugar and virtually fat free chocolatey treat.
